HD DVD Is Going Away - Now What?

Several manufacturers and video publishers have recently announced that they will no longer support HD DVD. Toshiba America Consumer Products L.L.C. sounded the first death knell on February 19, 2008, and several retailers quickly jumped on the funeral wagon.

Another case of "the consumer gets burned"?

Well, in one sense, yes, but in another sense, it creates a wonderful short-term opportunity. You've got to take advantage of this opportunity now or miss out. If you get burned a second time, you have only yourself to blame.

First, the bad news. If you bought an HD DVD player or player-recorder and a library of discs to play on it, they are a dead end. Face it, technology becomes obsolete and sooner or later you will upgrade to "Whatever's Next."

Ready for the punch line? Blu-Ray will become obsolete, too! "Sooner or later" came sooner for HD DVD, but it will certainly come later for Blu-Ray, and for "Whatever's Next."

Consider this. Many have compared the recent competition among high-definition video disc formats to the infamous VHS vs. Betamax format wars of the 1980s. VHS won that war. So, anybody want to buy a VHS? Of course not!

Just as you have slowly, inevitably replaced your collection of VHS tapes with DVDs, even the smug early adopters will eventually have to replace their Blu-Ray discs with "Whatever's Next." And you will have to replace your replace your HD DVDs with "Whatever's Next" as well.

But there is opportunity right now!

There are two opportunities, actually:

  • HD DVD players are available at fire-sale prices.
  • Video discs, both HD DVD and Blu-Ray, are selling at great discounts.

For the value-conscious, now is definitely not the time to buy a Blu-Ray player. Now that the future has been decided, manufacturers and retailers can command a premium for Blu-Ray hardware. Wait until the distribution chains have cleared out all their HD DVD players, then the Blu-Ray players will come back down in price.

But if you want to take advantage of the close-out, you can get an HD DVD player for a fraction of what it would have cost last year. And Toshiba and most reputable manufacturers have plans to keep repair parts for HD DVD players in stock for years to come. You will still be able to enjoy your HD DVD movies years from now, when we see the dawn of "Whatever's Next."

Meanwhile, the close-out of HD DVD media has created a buyer's market, not only for HD DVD discs but also for Blu-Ray. Movie and video studios need to get rid of their stocks of HD DVDs, but the consumer won't stand for having to pay too much more for the same movie on Blu-Ray.

Take a look around! HD DVDs are selling for 30% to 50% discounts off their usual retail prices. But the same titles on Blu-Ray are only slightly more expensive, with discounts of 25% to 35% not hard to find.

Chuck Bonner's specialty is nature and the outdoors, but for this limited time opportunity, his Couch Potato Central page will present close-out deals on HD DVD players. And as always, he's also keeping track of the best deals on nature documentaries and relaxation videos on HD DVD, Blu-Ray, and DVD on that same page. And again, act fast!

Online Business - It's Your Decision - So What's The Problem?

Does this sound like you?

Work a 40+ hour week.

Living check to check.

Too much credit card debt.

- BUT -

You want your own business.

You want to work from home.

You want to free up time.

You want BIG money!

I'm not selling an online course or promoting some lame network marketing scheme. This is where I tell you the truth. Everyone knows it but no one wants to say it out loud. Even most the 90% that fail know but knowing isn't enough. Why is 3% of the population in the world wealthy and 97% is not? Why does the vast majority of online businesses fail?

Before ad tracking, proper advertising, follow up or any of the other 'tips' everyone writes about, you must make a decision...

This may sound harsh but it's the absolute truth. It's the truth everyone knows but very few will admit - at least about themselves.

Until you're ready to get serious and STOP doing what every broke person does you are always going to be broke! I'm not here to fling mud at anyone but if you find yourself floundering around with no concrete direction it may be time for a reality check.

You want an online business and you setup a website. Then another one and another. You can't seem to earn any decent money. You begin to wonder if everyone's just lieing about the money they make. You've been to the seminars, read the e-books and studied all of the tips yet nothing!

Sound like someone? If so, keep reading.

DO YOU:

:: Still hang out with your friends that sit around and complain about work, bills and family? Do you join in on all the gossip because it makes you feel better?

:: Do you own an iPod, MP3 Players, gaming equipment, top of the line cell phone, big screen TV and every other latest and greatest gadget that hits the market?

:: Do you go out every week?

:: Are you wasting valuable time surfing, clicking and promoting for a little low quality advertising?

:: Do you read, watch and forward all those silly emails you get from your broke friends?

:: Are you staying on top of every detail in the news and politics?

You see, we absolutely MUST get our priorities straight before anything else. It's your decision and I'm not telling anyone what should be important and what shouldn't. To each his own and all that. I'm just pointing out the obvious because it seems the mass majority are blind to their own actions.

I've spent years hearing friends complain about the rat race and how much they want to be their own boss. Those same friends spend an incredible amount of time on self indulged entertainment. There's only so many hours each day and we have to decide how to spend them. Several hours a day watching TV and going to every sporting event may make you happy but it's not likely to make you money.

Choices can be hard and, yes, the truth hurts but until we make the choices that take us in the direction we want to go we'll always be lost.

You get the point. Priorities and focus! I'm not talking about goal setting. Priorities and focus have to come first. You have to have the right mindset if you expect any kind of financial success online or off. Again, it's your decision, I'm just pointing out some possible obstacles.

If you're ready to evaluate your priorities, start with the small stuff.

What's more important to YOU and what YOU want?

:: Discussing your business with your broke friends or following the lead of successful online entrepreneurs?

:: knowing everything there is to know about your favorite reality show or learning RSS, Web 2.0 and other new terms popping up everywhere?

:: Watching TV sitcoms or updating your site?

:: Tuning to the sports channel or building your list?

:: Drinking with your buddies or forming joint ventures?

:: Reading the latest gadget reviews or gathering testimonials?

We all have a limited amount of time and most of us have a limited amount of money. It's amazing to me that most people can drop a hundred bucks on a cheap night out without a second thought yet go into cardiac arrest at the idea of spending $50 on advertising. Do you spend countless hours searching for free ways to promote your online business? How much is your time worth? It's all about priorities.

Once you get the simple priorities straight you can begin to work on larger issues. Family, religion etc. and the big one - where and how you spend your money! Once you have a clear understanding of your TRUE priorities and make the absolute decision to re-align what's necessary the rest will be much easier. Goals and procedure can finally become a simple way of life.

That's Right I Said It
